April 30 | Midtown Viaducts Public Art + Light Project

Midtown Detroit, Inc. (MDI) in partnership with the New Economy Initiative (NEI) is seeking proposals to transform the undersides of two viaducts located in Midtown Detroit's TechTown district with public art and light.

Accepted proposals will be funded up to $75,000 per viaduct. For more information on how to apply, please go to www.midtownviaducts.com for a full set of guidelines. The deadline for applying is Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

May 15 - July 31 | Parallel Projections "Reanimate the Ruins" Competition

Parallel Projections invites you to participate in this open, international design competition; Reanimate The Ruins! Participants are charged to investigate and propose a new dynamic and adaptive urban node on one of the city's most iconic sites, the Packard Auto Plant.
Cast your vision for the rehabilitation of Detroit through the introduction of secondary urban nodes of destiny to support the city center. Use elements that make up a successful urban area through new mixed-use construction, while leaving part of the Packard in ruins as a monument to its history.

This competition is open to all include architects, engineers, urban designers, artists, and students. Competition registration opens May 15th and closes July 31st. First place includes a $3000 prize! Find out more at parallelprojections.com.

2014 Architecture / Digital Media Summer Camp

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture is currently enrolling students for the 2014 Architecture and Digital Media summer camp. The camp will take place at UDM between June 23rd - 27th and is open to any 9th - 12th graders. The application deadline is June 3rd. Preivous camps have been a great way of engaging young people and exposing them to school and architecture as a profession. For more information or to apply, visit the SOA website.

Diane Van Buren combines a passion for wise community investment and sustainable development practices to assist businesses and organizations plan and finance affordable green developments.   With over twenty years experience with the Detroit-based planning and development firm Zachary and Associates she has been engaged in critical planning and marketing efforts for both nonprofit organizations and for-profit developers with specific expertise in sustainable communities, financing green buildings, commercial revitalization strategies, green jobs and historic preservation.

Ms. Van Buren served as a Public Director on the National Board of the American Institute of Architects 2007-2008 and served on the Sustainability Committee and Long Range Planning Committees.  Additionally, she serves as a board member for Wayne State University Honors College and is a graduate of the Great Lakes Leadership Academy from Michigan State University, where she also earned a BA in Education with high honors.


Jason Davis

Jason received his a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Architecture from LTU. He is also a member of the Emerging Professionals Committee and was the Mentorship Chair for 2009-2011.  Jason is currently working as a Construction Manager / Owner’s Representative for Jacobs Engineering Group.
